Alex Browne and Randy Baltimore are running in the St. Philip’s North by-election
Employers across Antigua and Barbuda are being reminded that workers must be given time off to vote during the upcoming St. Philip North By-Election 2026, in accordance with the country’s election laws.
The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) has issued an important notice highlighting the legal obligations of employers on polling day under Section 34(1) of the Representation of the People (Amendment) Act, 2001 (No. 17 of 2001).
Under the law, every employer is required to allow employees who are eligible voters a period of four consecutive hours to cast their ballots.
The legislation further states that employers cannot deduct wages, reduce pay, or impose any form of penalty on employees who are absent from work during that four-hour period for the purpose of voting.
The provision is intended to ensure that all eligible voters have a fair opportunity to participate in the democratic process without fear of losing income or facing disciplinary action from their employers.
ABEC is encouraging businesses and organizations to cooperate fully with the requirement to help facilitate smooth voter participation during the St. Philip North by-election.
The Commission also reminded the public that exercising the right to vote remains a fundamental pillar of democracy in Antigua and Barbuda.
