Residents have raised concerns about how the police handle cases involving missing minors, prompting clarification from Everton Jeffers regarding the process followed by law enforcement.

Speaking on the issue, Commissioner Jeffers explained at a press conference on Tuesday that when a report is made that a minor is missing, the police immediately launch an investigation and may issue a public statement seeking assistance from the community to help locate the individual.

According to Jeffers, once the missing minor is found, the police will inform the public that the individual has been safely located. However, he noted that no additional details are typically released to the media.

“When a missing person report is made, an investigation will commence, and when that person is found they would be held at the station while their parents or guardians come to pick them up,” Jeffers said.

The commissioner added that the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the minor will determine whether further police action is taken.

“If that person is found with a minor, there are times that person would be arrested, and if they are found with an adult, then they will be arrested while police conduct further investigations,” he explained.

Jeffers emphasized that the police must balance the public’s demand for information with the need to protect the privacy and well-being of minors involved in such cases.

Despite the explanation, some residents continue to question the limited information released by authorities after a missing person is located, arguing that greater transparency could help address public speculation and concern surrounding these incidents.

  1. I think the public deserves more transparency. We want to know where they were and who was arrested

  2. The public may not need to all the details of the circumstances involved in such cases. However, the adult perpetrators involved in those cases should be exposed do that parents and other children can be wary of them. Particularly in the case of sexual predators, the public must be made aware.
