A collaborative effort to combat kidney disease has been launched in Barbuda, with a focus on education, early detection, and prevention.
The initiative, spearheaded by the World Kidney Day Team in partnership with the Antigua and Barbuda Samaritan Society, is being supported by the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre and the Medical Benefits Scheme.
Organisers described the pilot project as a meaningful outreach effort aimed at empowering residents with the knowledge and tools needed to protect their kidney health. The team engaged directly with members of the Barbuda community through education sessions and health screenings.

A central message of the initiative highlighted that diabetes and hypertension remain the leading causes of kidney disease. Residents were encouraged to actively manage their blood sugar and blood pressure levels, while adopting healthier lifestyles to reduce their risk.
The team also stressed the importance of proper nutrition, urging individuals to follow the six Caribbean food groups and maintain a balanced diet to support both kidney function and overall wellbeing.
In addition, Barbudans were advised to stay hydrated, remain physically active, and make consistent, healthy daily choices.
In a message shared following the visit, organisers expressed appreciation for the warm reception from the community.
“Thank you, Barbuda, for welcoming us. It was a pleasure serving your community and working together towards a healthier future,” the team said.
The pilot project is expected to play a key role in raising awareness and strengthening preventative healthcare efforts in Barbuda.
