The Antigua and Barbuda Consulate General in New York has launched a new initiative aimed at strengthening ties between the country and younger members of its diaspora, while encouraging their involvement in national development.
The effort, led by Antigua and Barbuda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Walton Webson, seeks to deepen connections with first, second, and third-generation Antiguans and Barbudans living in the United States.
Webson emphasized the importance of maintaining strong cultural and national ties among younger generations, noting that distance should not weaken their connection to their heritage.
“It is our obligation to ensure the voices of our first, second and third generations are heard and that their ties to Antigua and Barbuda are preserved and strengthened for the future,” he said.
As part of the initiative, the Consulate will host its first Diaspora Networking Mixer in the northeastern United States. The event is designed to create a platform for young nationals to engage with each other and with representatives from Antigua and Barbuda, while exploring opportunities to contribute to the country’s social and economic growth.
The mixer is scheduled for Wednesday, March 25, at Jumeika Grand Restaurant on Lexington Avenue in New York, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Attendees will hear brief presentations and have the opportunity to network with key figures, including Chef Claude Lewis, winner of the popular culinary competition Chopped, who is of Antiguan and Barbudan heritage, and Dean Fenton, the country’s Director of Tourism for the United States.
The Consulate also aims to use the initiative to expand its database of young nationals abroad, making it easier to engage their skills and expertise in diaspora and national activities.
Webson described the event as a critical first step in building stronger relationships with the next generation.
“This is the type of dialogue we need to foster so that we can better understand the needs of our young people and ensure they remain connected to Antigua and Barbuda,” he said.
Interested participants are encouraged to register online via Eventbrite or contact the Consulate’s New York office for further information.
