WATCH: Damaged Garbage Bins in St. John’s Spark Calls for Urgent Repairs

Concerns are mounting about the condition of garbage bins in St. John’s, with reports that several are already damaged and failing to hold waste properly.

The bins, which were placed a few years ago throughout the city by the Ministry of the Environment as part of a push to improve sanitation and curb illegal dumping, were intended to replace the unsightly plastic drums previously used.

However, residents and business owners say the new bins are already falling apart, with some unable to contain garbage securely.

In several areas, lids are reportedly loose or broken, and compartments meant to separate recyclable and general waste are not functioning as intended.

The initiative, led by the Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph, included installing more than 80 environmentally friendly bins with dual compartments for recycling and general waste.

Despite the project’s intentions, the current state of some bins has raised questions about their quality and durability, particularly given the capital’s high traffic.

There are now growing calls for the authorities to assess the condition of the bins, repair or replace damaged units, and ensure that any future installations are built to withstand daily use.

  2. I can hear, feel and smell the public blaming the government but not the vagrants and the careless people we have living in this little shit hole. You can see that this is from pure vandalism. And you guys took the time to actually walk through St. John’s you would’ve seen the rest how they look.

  3. The eyesore to the “land of sea and sun” I truly thought our main industry was tourism, but I don’t believe this a place tourism enjoys. It’s just a run down mess. Who to blame? Who knows?
