Journalist Azara Lavia has declined an approach by the United Progressive Party (UPP) to contest the upcoming general elections as its candidate for the St Paul constituency.

The Media Practitioner who is currently employed at Newsco, is also the Founder of Inspire Antigua & Barbuda, and Former St. Paul’s Queen Winner.

Lavia confirmed to Antigua.news that she was invited by the party to step forward following the departure of former prospective candidate Wayne Benjamin Marsh. However, she has opted not to enter frontline politics at this time.

Responding to queries, Lavia said her decision is rooted in her current personal and professional priorities.

“At this time, I am not pursuing any political role. My focus remains on my professional studies and responsibilities, and continued personal and academic development, and I am committed to giving my full attention to those priorities at this stage,” she said.

She added that while she is stepping away from the opportunity, she remains committed to contributing to national development in other ways.

“I will continue to contribute in meaningful ways where I can, and to support efforts that uplift and strengthen our country,” Lavia stated.

Lavia also signalled that her future path remains open, noting: “As I look ahead, I will allow God to direct my path wherever He leads me.”

Her decision leaves the UPP still searching for a replacement candidate in St Paul, after Marsh reportedly declined to proceed due to constitutional requirements regarding dual citizenship.

    • Something as sensitive as politics should be carefully thought of. You have to be mentally, socially and emotionally ready for such a call. I’m glad she didn’t just jump at this opportunity. Personal growth should always come first.
