Franz DeFreitas has been selected to contest the St. Paul seat in the upcoming General Election, replacing Wayne Benjamin Marsh on the United Progressive Party (UPP) slate. Party officials say the St. Paul Branch executive extended the invitation, which deFreitas accepted after receiving strong support from members.
According to an official UPP press release, Marsh formally withdrew at a UPP executive meeting on March 24, citing uncertainty over being able to complete the renunciation of his United States citizenship before the approaching elections. He also alleged that members of the Labour Party have circulated false claims regarding his decision.
Political Leader Jamale Pringle expressed confidence in DeFreitas’ candidacy, pointing to his family roots in Liberta and his long-standing community connections.
DeFreitas, known for his outreach to young people and small business owners, currently hosts the weekday program Hard Look on Progressive FM. He previously ran in St. John’s City South and says he is eager to take on this new role.
Despite stepping aside, Marsh affirmed his continued commitment to the United Progressive Party and its People First platform. The Central Executive thanked him for his service and his work as Caretaker.
