Man to be sentenced after pleading guilty to smoking in public

A man from Herberts has admitted to breaching cannabis laws after police found him smoking in a public area and carrying more than the permitted amount.

Jamie Darroux, 34, appeared before Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel following his arrest in Potters on March 23. Officers from the Narcotics Department reported seeing him using cannabis near the Registration Unit during routine patrols.

A subsequent search led to the discovery of 21 grams of the substance, exceeding the legal limit by six grams. The cannabis was estimated to be worth $210. He was charged with smoking in a public place and possession over the allowed threshold.

Darroux pleaded guilty to both offences. He was granted bail on his own recognizance, and sentencing has been set for March 30.

The case comes as officials step up enforcement of existing cannabis regulations. Under current law, smoking in public spaces can attract fines of up to EC$2,000. Restricted areas include government offices, schools, workplaces, public transport, and other locations open to the public.
