A man from Herberts avoided a financial penalty for smoking cannabis in public but still left court $500 lighter after being fined for carrying more of the drug than the legal limit permits.
Jamie Darroux was hauled before Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel after Narcotics Department officers caught him smoking beneath a tree near the Registration Unit in Potters on March 23rd. He admitted guilt on both counts.
For the public smoking offence, the court opted for leniency, choosing a reprimand and discharge over a monetary penalty. Magistrate Emanuel nonetheless delivered a pointed warning to Darroux — and extended the caution to the broader public — to stop lighting up in public spaces.
It was the possession charge that hit his wallet. A search of Darroux turned up 21 grams of cannabis, putting him six grams over the decriminalised limit of 15 grams. The excess, valued at $210, earned him a $500 fine.
