Leader of the Barbuda People’s Movement (BPM) Trevor Walker has declared confidence in another electoral victory after being officially nominated as his party’s candidate for the upcoming April 30 general elections.
Speaking at a public meeting in Barbuda last night, Walker struck a defiant and emotional tone, telling supporters that the BPM remains the only force capable of defending the island’s interests.
“This is my seventh election… and on the 30th, it’s going to be our time again,” Walker said, adding that the party is poised to secure another win in Barbuda.
Walker used the platform to push back against criticism of the Barbuda Council, insisting that his administration has delivered results despite what he described as ongoing financial constraints.
He accused the central government of slashing funding to Barbuda following Hurricane Irma, claiming the council was forced to operate under severe hardship.
“When we needed it most, the administration cut our transfer grant in half… there were times we couldn’t pay staff for months,” he said.
Despite these challenges, Walker said the BPM-led council found alternative ways to generate revenue and clear outstanding payments, including securing taxes owed to Barbuda from businesses operating on the island.
He pointed to infrastructure improvements, including road works completed without direct central government funding, as evidence of the council’s resilience and leadership.
Walker also took aim at ongoing disputes with developers, particularly over unpaid taxes and land-related issues, warning that the BPM will continue to take legal action where necessary to protect Barbuda’s resources.
“We have to stand up for the rights of the people… nobody can say this council is not working for Barbuda,” he told supporters.
Looking ahead, Walker outlined key priorities, including improving healthcare access on the island. He pledged to secure a dialysis machine for Barbudans, highlighting the burden currently placed on patients who must travel to Antigua multiple times per week for treatment.
The BPM leader also rejected what he described as “transactional politics,” cautioning voters against inducements and urging them to focus on the long-term future of Barbuda.
“No amount of money can buy the rights of this country… my only mandate is to the people,” Walker declared.
He closed by calling on residents to turn out in large numbers on election day, framing the vote as critical to safeguarding Barbuda’s autonomy and future.
“With the BPM in power, nobody will sell you out,” Walker said. “We will always stand up for Barbuda.”
