Cricket and concert at Sir Viv Richards Stadium is on the cards for CHOGM 2026
Two cricket matches at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium and a Global Citizen concert featuring international and Caribbean performers will anchor the cultural programme surrounding the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026, organisers have confirmed, with events timed to coincide with Antigua and Barbuda’s 44th anniversary of independence.
Co-Chair of the Media and Public Affairs Committee of the National Task Force, Everton Barnes, disclosed the plans during a hybrid engagement with local media, describing a programme designed to project the country and the wider Caribbean to a global audience during the November summit.
Barnes said both cricket fixtures would be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium under the theme “A Celebration of Peace, Unity, Leadership and Commonwealth Values.”
The first match will feature a Commonwealth Caribbean Heads and Senior Officials XI against a Rest of the Commonwealth Heads and Senior Officials XI, while the second will pit a Commonwealth Caribbean Under-23 Rising Stars XI against a Rest of the Commonwealth Under-23 Rising Stars XI.
The inclusion of cricket carries symbolic weight given the stadium’s namesake and the sport’s place in Caribbean identity, though organisers have not yet released the match dates or ticketing arrangements.
A separate Global Citizen Night concert is also being planned as part of the summit’s side programming.
Barnes said the organisation behind the event is the same body that previously hosted Prime Minister Gaston Browne at a Global Citizen gathering on the sidelines of a United Nations General Assembly.
“We want to position the region’s culture at the centre and not the peripheral to global civic life,” Barnes told media representatives.
He said the concert would feature an international headliner alongside Caribbean artists, with details still being finalised.
Barnes said the Department of Culture and the Creative Industries Department are working to ensure the country’s independence observance coincides meaningfully with the summit.
CHOGM 2026 will take place from November 1 to 4 around the theme “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth.”
It will be the first CHOGM held under the leadership of Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey and the first to be delivered under the organisation’s 2025-2030 Strategic Plan, which is anchored on three pillars: democratic resilience, economic resilience, and environmental resilience.
Director General for Foreign Affairs Ann-Marie Layne, speaking on behalf of CHOGM 2026 Focal Point High Commissioner Karen-Mae Hill, told journalists that the Strategic Plan also carries cross-cutting themes including support for small island developing states, youth empowerment, and gender equality.
In his remarks to media, Barnes linked the cultural showcase to the broader economic case for hosting the summit.
“Hosting CHOGM 26 positions Antigua and Barbuda at the centre of global decision-making, driving partnerships, investments and solutions that directly impact the country’s economic growth, climate resilience and international influence,” he said, adding that the international focus on the country could attract investments, business partnerships, and tourism capable of creating jobs and boosting local industries.
The cultural slate will run alongside the four main Commonwealth forums, which are scheduled concurrently from November 2 to 4.
The Commonwealth Women’s Forum and People’s Forum will be hosted at the American University of Antigua, while the Commonwealth Youth Forum will be held at the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus.
Further details on the cultural programme, including cricket match dates and the concert line-up, are expected to be released as preparations advance toward November.
