Michael Joseph and other officials at opening ceremony of new Five Islands playground
Residents of Five Islands are celebrating the completion of a new community playground, marking a significant investment in the well-being and development of children in the community.
The project, the brainchild of Michael Joseph, the caretaker and ABLP candidate for St. John’s Rural West has been years in the making and delivers a safe and engaging recreational space designed to provide young people with a positive environment for play and social interaction.
It was made possible through extensive fundraising efforts, with nearly $50,000 raised, along with support from community partners and donors.

“Again, this is all part of investment in ensuring that we have safe spaces for children for quality of spaces,” Joseph said during the official opening ceremony.
The playground represents Phase One of a broader development plan. Joseph confirmed that additional upgrades are already in the pipeline, including the installation of fencing, seating, and other enhancements aimed at improving the overall facility.
In a further boost for the community, it was also announced that a new community centre has been approved and is expected to begin construction within the next 12 months. The facility will be located opposite the playground, adding to the area’s growing infrastructure.

Plans are also underway for another recreational space, with the next playground project set to be developed at the former King George V grounds, now known as the Keeley Shepherd Recreational Park.

Would be nice to include lights and security so it can be used safely in the evenings.
If they follow through with the community centre too, this area could really transform.
Nice. i really believe it is important for children to have a place to recreate
