The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission reminds businesses that alcohol sales are prohibited on polling day
The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) has issued a firm reminder to businesses and the public that the sale and distribution of alcohol will be strictly prohibited on polling day for the 2026 General Elections.
In an official notice, ABEC cited Section 27 of the Representation of the People Act (Cap. 379), which states that no intoxicating liquor shall be sold, offered for sale, or given away at any licensed premises in any constituency while polls are open on election day.
The restriction applies for the entire duration of voting hours and is intended to maintain order, discipline, and the integrity of the electoral process.
Authorities warned that any breach of the law will carry serious consequences. Individuals found in violation could face a fine of up to EC$3,000 and imprisonment for up to 12 months upon summary conviction.
The Commission is urging bar owners, shopkeepers, and vendors to comply fully with the directive, while also reminding voters to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the electoral period.
With General Elections set for April 30, officials say the measure forms part of broader efforts to ensure a peaceful, fair, and orderly voting environment across Antigua and Barbuda
