An urgent call has gone out for aid to Cuba
A humanitarian appeal is underway in Antigua and Barbuda calling on residents and businesses to assist Cuba during a time of urgent medical need, with a nationwide drive now open to collect funds and essential supplies for Cuban hospitals.
James Knight, the organizer of the initiative says the campaign, themed “A Friend Indeed is Now a Friend in Need,” underscores the long-standing relationship between Antigua and Barbuda and Cuba, particularly in the areas of healthcare and education.
Members of the public are being encouraged to make generous contributions in cash or by cheque, payable to Williams and Associates Dental Ltd. Donations can be delivered directly to the Williams and Associates Dental Clinic, located at Deanery, where official receipts will be issued.
The clinic will accept donations on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., and on Saturdays until 12:00 noon. The deadline for contributions has been set for Saturday, May 9.
Knight says the funds raised will go toward the procurement of urgently needed medical supplies for Cuban hospitals, many of which continue to face shortages.
“This is a moment for compassion and solidarity,” the appeal states, urging individuals to give generously and support a nation that has historically provided medical assistance to Antigua and Barbuda and the wider Caribbean.
The campaign is appealing to the public’s sense of gratitude and humanity, reminding citizens of Cuba’s longstanding contributions, particularly through its medical brigade programme which has supported regional healthcare systems for decades.
Organisers are encouraging widespread participation, adding that even small contributions can make a meaningful difference.
“HAVE A HEART! Give as willingly as you’ve been given,” the appeal concludes.
