Malaka Parker with health screening participant in Yorks
A weekend health fair in Yorks drew a steady stream of residents seeking free medical checks and consultations, an event organised by United Progressive Party candidate for St. John’s Rural North, Malaka Parker.
Hosted at the Yorks Basketball Court, the fair offered a cool, relaxed setting under an air‑conditioned tent, where a paediatrician, ophthalmologist and general practitioner provided screenings.

Parker called the turnout “a resounding success,” saying it reflects a clear demand for closer‑to‑home medical support.
“What our communities require at this time is decentralised, community-level healthcare that extends beyond traditional facilities,” she said. “That is why I will be advocating for a mobile screening unit to go into communities to conduct testing and provide basic services.”

Earlier that morning, Parker reminded residents that her focus is on people above politics.
“I’m about people, whether red, yellow, blue or orange. I don’t care. It’s about people,” she said through a mobile public address system.
Her Community Development Plan lists healthcare and wellness as major priorities, along with an MBS Pharmacy outlet at Cedar Grove Clinic, longer clinic hours, new “Fit Village” clubs and training for local “Wellness Champions.”

Parker thanked the many helpers and sponsors who supported the fair and said she is eager to continue building similar partnerships across the constituency.

So where was she all the time to give?
