Dr. Dario Item, Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to Spain, Monaco and Liechtenstein, with China’s Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda, Her Excellency Jiang Wei
Diplomatic engagement took center stage on Wednesday as Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to Spain, Monaco and Liechtenstein, Dr. Dario Item, held a courtesy meeting with China’s Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda, Her Excellency Jiang Wei, in what officials described as a productive and forward-looking discussion.
The meeting underscored growing diplomatic cooperation between Antigua and Barbuda, China, and European partners, with both ambassadors exchanging views on strengthening bilateral and multilateral relations.
Central to the talks were opportunities for deeper collaboration, including increased official visits and expanded engagement across diplomatic and development channels.
A key highlight of the discussions was a proposal by Ambassador Item aimed at enhancing national security in Antigua and Barbuda.
He suggested that China consider supporting the installation of a nationwide camera surveillance network to assist in crime prevention and law enforcement efforts.
Ambassador Jiang responded positively to the proposal, expressing interest in the concept and openness to exploring how such an initiative could be developed in partnership with local authorities. Both sides agreed to continue discussions on the idea, with a view to identifying practical pathways for implementation.
Beyond security, the two diplomats also explored broader avenues for cooperation between their respective embassies, focusing on how joint initiatives could deliver tangible benefits to Antigua and Barbuda. Areas of collaboration discussed included technical support, investment opportunities, and knowledge exchange.
The conversation also touched on Antigua and Barbuda’s political landscape, with both ambassadors exchanging perspectives on the upcoming general elections and the potential implications for governance and international partnerships.
The meeting was described as cordial and constructive, reflecting a shared commitment to diplomacy, development, and continued engagement in support of Antigua and Barbuda’s national interests.
Officials say the dialogue marks another step in strengthening international partnerships as the country navigates both domestic priorities and its role on the global stage.

We need more than cameras, we need stronger policing and justice system too.
If done properly, this could modernize law enforcement big time
China always willing to invest where others hesitate. Antigua should take advantage, but negotiate wisely.
Great stuff Amb Item. Looking forward to hearing more plans and see them executed. Clapping hands for you!
Good to see ambassadors actually talking about real solutions. Crime is a serious issue right now
