Prime Minister Gaston Browne delivered one of his most forceful warnings to date on Labour Day, declaring that foreign managers who mistreat Antiguan and Barbudan workers will face deportation.
Speaking before a large Labour Day gathering yesterday, Browne said his administration will not tolerate any form of disrespect toward local workers, particularly from expatriates in positions of authority.
“I say to the foreign leadership within the private sector… those of you who have a propensity to disrespect our workers — if you disrespect our workers, then you will be deported,” Browne warned.
The statement drew loud approval from the crowd and signals a sharper posture by the government on labour rights enforcement, particularly in sectors such as tourism and construction where foreign management is common.
Browne framed the issue as one of national dignity, insisting that workers — not executives — are the true foundation of the country.
“The workers of this country, they are the architects, they are the builders, and they must be respected,” he said.
He also extended the warning beyond the private sector, calling on public sector leaders to treat employees with fairness and respect, noting that dignity in the workplace must be universal.
The Prime Minister linked the stance to Antigua and Barbuda’s labour history, referencing past struggles for workers’ rights and arguing that any modern-day exploitation would betray that legacy.
The remarks are likely to resonate strongly with workers but could spark concern among sections of the business community, particularly foreign investors and operators who may view the rhetoric as aggressive.
Still, Browne made it clear that his government’s priority is unwavering: “Every single worker in this country must be treated with respect.”

Hmmmmm so is it ok for Antiguan management to do the disrespecting and bad treatment?
Good. And that should include those Syrians too.
But while we’re in the topic of foreign managers mistreating locals, start over at Chase Distributors where they treat people like objects.

He needs a serious check on all foreign managers and business owners. They treats their employees like trash and underpays them. Most of their money send back to their country.
