Minister of Social and Urban Transformation Rawdon Turner presents check to Mrs Ruth Henry. He is accompanied by Shenella Govia, Minister of State in the Ministry of Works and Housing.
Mrs. Ruth Henrietta Georgiana Henry was honoured in grand style this morning as she celebrated her 100th birthday during a special ceremony held under the auspices of Governor General Sir Rodney Williams.
As part of the celebration, the centenarian was presented with a cheque for EC$10,000 from the Government of Antigua and Barbuda — fulfilling a pledge made in the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party administration’s manifesto to support citizens who reach the remarkable milestone of 100 years.
Minister of Urban and Social Transformation Rawdon Turner made the presentation on behalf of Prime Minister Gaston Browne and described the moment as “promise delivered.”
Turner said the government was proud to honour the nation’s centenarians, noting that individuals like Mrs. Henry represent living history and serve as examples of strength, sacrifice, faith, and resilience for younger generations.
The grant forms part of a newly announced Centenarian Grant initiative outlined by the ABLP Government, which pledges EC$10,000 to every Antiguan and Barbudan citizen upon reaching 100 years of age.
The initiative is intended to go beyond ceremonial recognition by providing practical support and appreciation to elderly citizens who have contributed to their families, communities, and country throughout their lives.
The programme also complements the existing official recognition system for centenarians and is being framed as part of the government’s broader “Renaissance” vision focused on dignity, compassion, and honour for senior citizens.
Mrs. Henry was warmly celebrated by family members, officials, and well-wishers during the occasion, marking a century of life and legacy.
