Ministry Intensifies Mosquito Control Following Imported Malaria Cases

Fogging

Mosquito control activities have been intensified across sections of Antigua and Barbuda following confirmation of two imported malaria cases. One of the reported cases has resulted in a death.

Health Minister Michael Joseph said the Ministry of Health, through the Central Board of Health, has launched expanded vector surveillance and mosquito reduction measures in response to the cases.

According to Minister Joseph, the operations include environmental inspections, larviciding, targeted fogging, source reduction exercises and continued monitoring of mosquito populations.

The ministry is urging residents to play their part by removing standing water from around homes and workplaces and ensuring water storage containers are properly covered.

Authorities continue to emphasize that there is no evidence of local malaria transmission.

  1. What people does not understand is the overusing of fogging makes the mosquito nuisance worse. For instance, there is plenty of standing water in Jolly Harbour- golf course or the unmaintained North Beach channel that was completely neglected for bti larvicide treatment making it a perfect breeding ground for mosquitos.

    • Well we hope they see your comments. What’s the other methods you suggest we can get mosquitoes out of here?because fogging seem to be the best method

      • The real problem with their malaria justification is that Zenivex E4 is labelled for Aedes and Culex vectors, not Anopheles, and adult outdoor fogging is ineffective against Anopheles which feeds indoors at night—so if they’re admitting they’re spraying for malaria, they’re actually spraying for the wrong vector.

  2. These mosquitoes are immune to the chemicals now believe me. They dance in that smoke
