As the world marked World Environment Day on Friday, Gautam Karve, Editor-in-Chief of the World Media Organization, issued a call for urgent global action to protect biodiversity, warning that the continued loss of species and ecosystems poses a serious threat to humanity’s future.
In a statement released to commemorate the occasion, Karve described biodiversity as the foundation of life on Earth, noting that every species, ecosystem and natural habitat plays a critical role in maintaining the planet’s balance.
He cautioned that biodiversity loss is increasingly threatening food security, access to clean water, climate stability and the well-being of future generations.
Karve highlighted a range of environmental challenges, including deforestation, pollution, habitat destruction and climate change, which he said are accelerating the decline of plant and animal species around the world.
While acknowledging the role of governments and international organizations in addressing environmental concerns, he stressed that protecting biodiversity requires collective action from individuals, communities and nations alike.
He encouraged people to adopt environmentally responsible practices such as reducing waste, conserving natural resources, supporting sustainable initiatives, planting trees and helping to protect wildlife.
Karve said safeguarding biodiversity should be viewed not only as an environmental responsibility but as a global duty, adding that coordinated action today can help create a greener, healthier and more sustainable future for generations to come.
World Environment Day is observed annually on June 5 and serves as the United Nations’ principal platform for encouraging awareness and action on environmental issues worldwide.
