The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service has assured residents that there is no tsunami threat to Antigua and Barbuda following a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that struck the Cuba region on Monday afternoon.
According to the agency, the earthquake occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m. AST (1800 UTC) on June 8, 2026. The quake was recorded at a depth of 33 kilometres (20 miles) and was centred near coordinates 22.8°N and 85.3°W.
Meteorologists said that based on all available data, the event does not pose any significant tsunami risk to Antigua and Barbuda. While there remains a very small possibility of localized tsunami waves near coastlines closest to the earthquake’s epicentre, no impacts are expected across Antigua and Barbuda.
Authorities are advising residents that no action is required and normal activities can continue.
The Meteorological Service is encouraging the public to remain informed through official channels and to use the opportunity to review personal tsunami preparedness and evacuation plans, particularly for those living or working in coastal communities.
Officials noted that this is expected to be the only statement issued regarding the earthquake unless new information becomes available or conditions change.
Residents can continue to receive updates through the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service’s CAP alert system, official social media platforms, and media partners.
