A routine ferry trip between St. Kitts and Nevis turned into a dramatic rescue operation on Monday after the inter-island ferry Apple Syder began taking on water and partially submerged just minutes after leaving Basseterre.
According to the St. Kitts & Nevis Observer, all 47 passengers and crew members aboard the vessel were safely rescued following a swift response by the St. Kitts and Nevis Coast Guard and other emergency personnel.
Initial reports indicate the ferry experienced difficulties shortly after departing on its scheduled voyage to Nevis, prompting an emergency rescue operation.
Videos circulating on social media show frightened passengers wearing life jackets floating in the sea as rescue teams rushed to the scene. Responders were seen pulling people from the water while the ferry slowly began to submerge.
Despite the frightening ordeal, all those on board were brought to safety, and there have been no reports of fatalities or serious injuries.
Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew confirmed that he had been briefed on the incident, while Nevis Premier Mark Brantley also acknowledged the situation and said he was receiving updates.
