APUA Celebrates 53 Years of Powering Antigua and Barbuda’s Development

The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) is celebrating 53 years of service to Antigua and Barbuda, marking more than five decades of providing essential electricity, water and telecommunications services that have supported the country’s growth and development.

The milestone will officially be observed on Saturday, July 4, following a commemorative church service held on Thursday at the Ottos Wesleyan Holiness Church under the theme, “Honoring Our Past, Embracing Our Future.”

As part of the anniversary celebrations, Minister of Information, Communication Technologies, Utilities and Energy, Hon. Melford Nicholas, congratulated the Authority on reaching the significant milestone and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting APUA’s continued transformation.

“The Government remains committed to supporting the transformation of APUA, so that the Authority can deliver a more sustainable water supply, reduce energy costs through the adoption of renewable energy, and provide affordable broadband and mobile services to the people of Antigua and Barbuda,” Minister Nicholas said.

Addressing employees and invited guests during the anniversary service, APUA Chief Executive Officer John Bradshaw reflected on the organisation’s evolution since its establishment in 1973. He noted that APUA holds a unique place among utility providers globally as one of the few organisations delivering electricity, water and telecommunications services under a single entity.

Bradshaw acknowledged the financial challenges facing the Authority but expressed confidence in its future, highlighting plans to strengthen sustainability, improve customer service and embrace technological innovation.

“While the challenges are real, APUA remains committed to its purpose and to serving the people of Antigua and Barbuda. By embracing technology, innovation, and sustainable planning, we believe brighter days are ahead for the Authority and the customers we serve,” he said.

As it celebrates its 53rd anniversary, APUA also extended appreciation to the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, its customers, employees—both past and present—and stakeholders for their continued support over the years.

The Authority says it remains focused on building on its legacy while delivering reliable, modern and sustainable utility services for future generations.
