Former Athlete Found Guilty of Serious Indecency Charges Against Daughter
A former athlete has been found guilty of two counts of serious indecency committed against his young daughter, with sentencing set for July 24.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, was convicted following a trial before Justice Ann Marie Smith in the High Court.
According to Wadadli Case Files, the jury found him guilty of two separate acts involving the child but returned a not guilty verdict on a third count of indecent assault.
The charges were linked to incidents alleged to have occurred between April 2022 and April 2023, during a period when the child was living with her father. The prosecution told the court that the alleged acts began sometime after the child’s eighth birthday.
During the trial, the child testified about the incidents, telling the court that they occurred on occasions when her father’s girlfriend was not at home. She said her father would invite her into his bed and instruct her to remove her clothing.
The court also heard testimony from the child’s grandmother, who recalled an incident where the child was found hiding in a closet in distress when the accused arrived to collect her.
Both the child and her grandmother denied suggestions from defence attorney Wendel Alexander that the allegations had been fabricated.
After hearing the evidence, the jury returned guilty verdicts on the two serious indecency charges.
Justice Ann Marie Smith is expected to sentence the former athlete on July 24.
