Antigua and Barbuda has combined tourism promotion with charitable giving through its inaugural participation in Polo For Heart, one of Canada’s longest-running fundraising sporting events, helping to support cardiac care while showcasing the destination to Canadian travellers.

The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA) marked the first year of a multi-year partnership with the annual event, now in its 46th year, which was held at the Toronto Polo Club. The fundraiser benefits Southlake Health, with proceeds from ticket sales, donations, silent auctions and other activities going toward critical cardiac care services for patients and families.

Tourism officials said the partnership provides an opportunity to promote Antigua and Barbuda in one of its key source markets while supporting an initiative that has made a significant contribution to healthcare in Canada.

Director of Tourism for Canada, Tameka Wharton, said the event reflects values that align closely with those of Antigua and Barbuda.

“Polo For Heart brings together many of our shared values: community, generosity, culture and connection,” Wharton said. “This cause has incredible heart behind it, and we were proud to support an event that makes a real difference for cardiac care while also allowing us to share the warmth and vibrancy of Antigua and Barbuda with Canadian guests.”

The destination officially launched its presence with Polo in Paradise, an opening-night celebration that transformed the polo grounds into a Caribbean-inspired experience featuring authentic Antiguan and Barbudan cuisine, signature cocktails, steelpan music and an evening of entertainment.

Antigua and Barbuda’s Consul General to Canada, Gail Christian, praised the Tourism Authority’s presentation, describing it as an authentic reflection of the destination’s hospitality and appeal.

“What we witnessed at Polo in Paradise was the excellence of Antigua and Barbuda’s tourism offering brought to life,” Christian said. “The Tourism Authority created a true sense of the warmth, hospitality and luxury that define our destination.”

Throughout the weekend, visitors were invited to experience Antigua and Barbuda through interactive displays highlighting the country’s wellness offerings, music, cuisine and cultural heritage. Guests also viewed an exhibition featuring works by Antiguan and Barbudan artists, providing insight into the nation’s creative community and cultural identity.

The Tourism Authority also contributed to the event’s fundraising efforts by donating a four-night stay at the luxury Curtain Bluff resort for the silent auction, while younger visitors enjoyed family-friendly activities, including an interactive colouring mural inspired by Antigua and Barbuda.

Karen White, Executive Director of Polo For Heart, welcomed the new partnership, saying Antigua and Barbuda added a unique energy to the event.

“Antigua and Barbuda is a natural fit for Polo For Heart,” White said. “They bring a sense of warmth, colour and celebration that aligns beautifully with the spirit of the event. This first year added a vibrant new dimension for our guests, and we are excited to continue building on this partnership in the years ahead.”

Tourism officials said the collaboration forms part of Antigua and Barbuda’s broader strategy to engage new audiences through experiential marketing while highlighting the country’s culture, cuisine, wellness, arts and hospitality.

They added that the partnership not only strengthens Antigua and Barbuda’s visibility in the Canadian market but also demonstrates the destination’s commitment to supporting meaningful community initiatives beyond tourism promotion.
