A commercial cargo vessel sailing under the Antigua and Barbuda flag has been struck during a Russian missile attack on Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Odesa, leaving one person dead and three others injured.

The attack took place on Saturday as Russian forces launched a series of strikes targeting Odesa and its port infrastructure, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Oleh Kiper, head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, said the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged vessel was hit while operating near the port. The strike resulted in the death of one individual on board and left three others injured. Officials have not yet disclosed the identities or nationalities of the victims.

The missile attack also caused extensive damage to the port, destroying warehouses, storage facilities and other civilian infrastructure.

Authorities said Russian forces launched a second strike while emergency crews were responding to the initial attack. Although specialized rescue equipment was damaged, no emergency personnel were reported injured.

The incident marks the second attack on a foreign-flagged commercial vessel in Odesa within 24 hours. On Friday evening, a missile strike damaged a civilian cargo ship flying the Marshall Islands flag, setting part of the vessel ablaze and injuring four members of its 17-person crew.

While the vessel was registered under the Antigua and Barbuda flag, there has been no indication that any Antiguan or Barbudan nationals were among the crew. Officials have also not released the ship’s name, ownership details or information about its cargo.

The latest attack underscores the continuing dangers facing international merchant vessels operating in the Black Sea, where commercial shipping has remained vulnerable since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Antigua and Barbuda operates one of the world’s international ship registries, with vessels flying the nation’s flag trading in ports across the globe. As of Sunday, there had been no public statement from authorities in Antigua and Barbuda regarding the incident.
