Rockell Browne Convicted of Wounding Transport Board Colleague, Sentencing Set for September

Rockell Browne has been convicted of wounding a fellow employee at the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board after the High Court rejected her claim that she acted in self-defence during a violent workplace altercation.

According to Wadadli Case Files, Browne was found guilty following a judge-only trial before Justice John Spencer, who concluded that the evidence did not support her version of events.

The prosecution, led by Crown Counsel Curtis Cornelius, told the court that although Browne and the complainant were not friends, they were not known to have had any longstanding hostility. The complainant testified that Browne had brushed against her shoulder on several occasions before the incident, but she never reported the behaviour.

The confrontation occurred in December 2022 after the complainant had clocked out from work and returned to a room to collect her bag. The court heard that the two women encountered each other in a doorway, and Browne pushed the complainant with enough force that her back struck a light switch, turning off the lights in the room.

A fight then broke out between the two employees.

During the struggle, a third person attempted to separate the women. However, the court heard that Browne grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed the complainant three times.

Browne denied being the aggressor, insisting she acted in self-defence. She claimed the complainant and the person who intervened had attacked her together and alleged that the complainant had been the one who routinely bumped into her at work. Browne also told the court she had reported the issue to three supervisors.

One of those supervisors testified that no such complaint had ever been made.

Browne further alleged that the intervening employee assaulted her because of a romantic relationship with the complainant. Another witness who observed the altercation also testified during the trial.

Justice Spencer rejected Browne’s account and found her guilty of wounding.

Browne, who was represented by attorney Wendel Alexander, has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on September 25
