Senator Angelica O’Donoghue Launches “Your Future Is Yours” Award to Inspire Young Dreamers

Seventy-one students proudly crossed the stage during Villa Primary School’s 2026 Graduation Ceremony, but for one graduate, the occasion was marked by a special recognition designed to inspire a lifetime of ambition and possibility.

Senator Angelica O’Donoghue, an alumna of Villa Primary School, presented the inaugural “Your Future Is Yours” Award to graduate Nerissa Harris, recognizing her for embodying “the courage to dream, the determination to achieve, and the belief that your future has no limits.”

Selected by the school’s teachers from among the graduating class of 71 students, Nerissa was chosen as the student who best exemplified perseverance, character, and the determination to succeed despite life’s challenges.

More than a commemorative plaque, the award also included sponsorship of Nerissa’s registration fees to attend Princess Margaret Secondary School, where she earned placement through the National Assessment, along with financial assistance toward the purchase of her school uniforms.

Senator O’Donoghue explained that while she has previously sponsored awards at her alma mater, she wanted to establish something that celebrates students whose dreams are matched by resilience and determination.

“Success isn’t defined by where you begin or the obstacles you face. It is defined by your willingness to dream, to persevere, and to keep believing that your future belongs to you. I wanted this award to recognize a child who embodies that spirit and to remind them that someone believes in their potential.”

She added that investing in young people is one of the most meaningful ways to strengthen communities and create opportunities for the next generation.

Guardian of the award recipient, Ms. Tahna Weston, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Senator O’Donoghue, thanking her not only for the sponsorship but also for believing in Nerissa’s abilities and investing in her future.
Senator O’Donoghue also presented a laptop computer to Top Graduating Girl and Salutatorian, Jaedah Baird, recognizing her outstanding academic achievement and encouraging her continued pursuit of excellence as she transitions to secondary school.

The Senator Angelica O’Donoghue “Your Future Is Yours” Award is expected to become an annual presentation, recognizing Villa Primary School graduates who demonstrate courage, determination, and the belief that their future has no limits.
