Agriculture Interns Experience Hands-On Learning at Sea

Agriculture interns gained firsthand insight into Antigua and Barbuda’s fishing industry during an educational excursion hosted in collaboration with the Antigua and Barbuda Coast Guard and local fishers.
After receiving comprehensive safety briefings, the interns boarded two fishing vessels and travelled beyond St. John’s Harbour, where they experienced changing sea conditions and learned the importance of preparation, safety, and respect for the ocean.
Under the guidance of experienced captains, the interns took turns steering the vessels and were introduced to modern navigation technology, including Garmin GPS systems used to locate fishing grounds, monitor water depth, identify reefs, and retrieve fish pots.
The group also observed the retrieval of fish pots and learned about traditional fishing methods, including the use of locally sourced wattle in fish pot construction, highlighting the connection between sustainable forestry and the fishing industry.
Throughout the trip, the captains shared practical insights into the challenges of commercial fishing, stressing the importance of sound judgment, reliable navigation and communication equipment, and adapting to rapidly changing weather conditions.
The excursion gave the interns a deeper appreciation of the skill, resilience, and professionalism of Antigua and Barbuda’s fishing community, while reinforcing the sector’s vital role in the country’s food security, economy, and maritime heritage.
