The Calvin Ayre Foundation (CAF) has partnered with the Medical Benefits Scheme (MBS) to assist an Antiguan cardiac patient in accessing urgent specialised medical treatment overseas.

Ulysis James was transferred to Martinique for advanced cardiac care after suffering an acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), a serious form of heart attack.

James was initially admitted to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, where he received emergency treatment. However, he subsequently developed recurrent chest pain and additional clinical complications that prompted doctors to recommend urgent specialist intervention not currently available in Antigua and Barbuda.

Following an assessment by his medical team, James was referred to CHU de Martinique for specialised cardiac treatment.

The Medical Benefits Scheme approved funding to cover the full cost of his medical treatment, while the Calvin Ayre Foundation stepped in to cover his medical travel expenses, allowing the transfer to take place without unnecessary delay.

James’ daughter, Shereen James Galloway, said the assistance provided much-needed relief to the family during a difficult and uncertain period.

“The support we received went far beyond financial assistance. The kindness, compassion and professionalism shown by the Calvin Ayre Foundation, CalvinAir, EMT Jeremias Samuel, and everyone involved made an incredibly difficult journey so much easier for our family,” she said.

“They gave us hope when we needed it most, and we will always be grateful.”

The latest medical transfer underscores the ongoing partnership between CAF and MBS in helping Antiguans and Barbudans overcome financial and logistical barriers to accessing potentially life-saving treatment overseas.
