Most gas stations across Antigua and Barbuda have reopened after hours of industrial action linked to fuel dealers’ demands for increased profit margins.

Most gas stations across Antigua and Barbuda have reopened following several hours of industrial action on Tuesday.

The temporary closures caused significant disruption, with long lines forming at the few stations that remained open as motorists rushed to secure fuel.

The action reportedly stemmed from demands by gas station operators for an increase in their profit margins. Prime Minister Gaston Browne had criticised the timing of the move, arguing that it came as international fuel prices were rising and the Government was already absorbing some of the increased costs to protect consumers.

The Prime Minister maintained that the Government had not increased its own margin and had passed on only part of the rising costs in an effort to limit its losses while keeping fuel prices manageable.

Although the reopening of most service stations has brought relief to motorists, the industrial action highlighted continuing tensions between fuel dealers and the Government over operating margins.

It was not immediately clear whether an agreement had been reached or whether further discussions would be held to address the operators’ concerns.
