George Alexander Sheppard Celebrates 100th Birthday, Receives Government’s $10,000 Gift

The Community Development and Citizens’ Engagement Division within the Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation, in collaboration with the Office of the Governor General, joined Mr George Alexander Sheppard and his family on Tuesday to celebrate his remarkable 100th birthday.

 The celebration was held at Sheppard’s residence in Gunthorpes, where the Government of Antigua and Barbuda presented him with a EC$10,000 cheque under its centenarian recognition initiative.

The government programme celebrates citizens who reach the age of 100 and recognises their longevity, sacrifices and contributions to the development of their families, communities and country. It also reflects the Government’s continued commitment to honouring senior citizens and ensuring that their lives and legacies are celebrated.

Born in Jennings, Sheppard has lived in several communities throughout his life, including Winthorpes, Parham and All Saints, before eventually making Gunthorpes his home.

During his century of life, he has witnessed tremendous changes across Antigua and Barbuda while remaining a testament to the values of hard work, perseverance, love, commitment and devotion to family.

His 100th birthday represents more than a personal milestone. It celebrates a lasting legacy and inspires younger generations, reminding the nation of the importance of cherishing its elders and valuing the wisdom and experience they possess.

The programme included heartfelt remarks and presentations from representatives of the Community Development and Citizens’ Engagement Division, Permanent Secretary Rosa Greenaway, Leader of the Opposition Jamale Pringle, and the acting director of Community Development and Citizens’ Engagement.

Sheppard’s great-granddaughter delivered a Scripture reading, while his daughter shared touching reflections on his life and the impact he has had on his family.

Gifts were also presented to Sheppard in appreciation of his remarkable journey and contributions to his family and community.

Special appreciation was extended to Development Officers Sharon Dalso and Delmarie King for their commitment and attention to detail in planning and executing the celebration.Lae Stationery and Anja Creations were also thanked for generously donating the birthday cake and centenarian card, which added a special touch to the occasion.

The Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation, through its Community Development and Citizens’ Engagement Division, extended warm wishes to Sheppard as he joined Antigua and Barbuda’s distinguished group of centenarians.
