Antigua and Barbuda Signs Visa Waiver Agreement with Azerbaijan at UN General Assembly

Antigua and Barbuda has signed a visa waiver agreement with Azerbaijan, a key outcome of Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene’s diplomatic meetings on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

Greene and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov signed the agreement during a brief ceremony. It provides for eligible citizens of both countries to travel between Antigua and Barbuda and Azerbaijan without first obtaining a visa. The specific eligibility rules and implementation date were not provided in the announcement.

The signing was part of a wider series of bilateral meetings for Greene during the UN gathering. Preparations for Antigua and Barbuda’s hosting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting featured in his discussions with UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State Chris Elmore.

Greene also met Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Ablakwa and Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs Musalia Mudavadi. During the separate engagements, he introduced María Fernanda Espinosa, Antigua and Barbuda’s candidate for the post of UN Secretary-General. He also held talks with Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan on foreign policy matters and Espinosa’s candidacy.

In another meeting, Greene joined Prime Minister Gaston Browne for discussions with UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on trade and economic opportunities for Antigua and Barbuda.

The visa agreement marks the clearest formal outcome reported from a week in which Antigua and Barbuda pursued travel, diplomatic and economic ties with partners across several regions.
