BREAKING: Inmate Dies After Setting Himself Ablaze at Antigua Prison

An inmate has died after reportedly setting himself on fire inside a maximum-security cell at His Majesty’s Prison in Antigua.

That information has been confirmed to Antigua.news by the Prison Superintendent, Colonel Trevor Pennyfeather.

The incident reportedly occurred shortly before 4 p.m. on Monday.

According to preliminary information, the 31-year-old prisoner was alone inside the cell when the fire broke out. Prison officials have not yet determined what was used to ignite the blaze.

Two other inmates reportedly suffered smoke inhalation and were treated by emergency medical personnel. They were said to have been housed in nearby cells and were not inside the cell where the fire originated.

Officials are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the inmate gained access to material capable of starting a fire. Reports of lights dimming shortly before the blaze was discovered are also expected to form part of the investigation.

The deceased inmate’s name is being withheld until his relatives have been formally notified.
