Antigua and Barbuda’s Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister, E. Paul Chet Greene, chaired proceedings during the opening day of the United Nations General Debate on Tuesday, as world leaders and senior officials began delivering their national addresses in New York.

Greene’s turn at the rostrum placed Antigua and Barbuda in a visible role at the start of the 81st session’s high-level week. The session’s theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All,” reflects concerns about the organisation’s ability to respond to global challenges.

Greene described the assignment as a moment of pride for Antigua and Barbuda and a sign of the regard in which the country is held internationally.

“It shows that the country is still being held with considerable respect among the international community. And being called on to serve in such a role moves us beyond simply participating in an important diplomatic process but playing a role in managing its proceedings,” he said.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne is expected to join Antigua and Barbuda’s delegation at the United Nations on Wednesday. Health and Environment Minister Michael Joseph is also in New York for high-level week meetings.
