Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment, Michael Freeland, has congratulated Tourism Minister Charles “Max” Fernandez on his unanimous election as chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Council of Ministers and Commissioners of Tourism.

In a congratulatory message, Freeland described the appointment as a proud moment for Antigua and Barbuda and recognition of Fernandez’s dedication to tourism.

He said the election reflected the confidence regional tourism leaders have placed in Fernandez, as Antigua and Barbuda returns to the chairmanship for the first time in more than 15 years.

“Max, it is a privilege to work alongside you. Your commitment to creating opportunities for our people, strengthening regional partnerships and advancing Caribbean tourism will serve you well in this new responsibility,” Freeland said.

Freeland welcomed Fernandez’s priorities, particularly advancing women into leadership roles, investing in young tourism professionals and improving connections across the Caribbean.

“These priorities will help ensure that tourism’s benefits reach more Caribbean people and communities,” he said.

He also congratulated Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority Chief Executive Officer Colin James, who will assume the chairmanship of the CTO Board of Directors.

Pledging his support, Freeland expressed confidence in the opportunities for regional progress under Fernandez’s leadership.

“You have my full support as you undertake this important role. I wish you a successful tenure and look forward to the progress we can achieve together for Antigua and Barbuda and the wider Caribbean,” he said.

Fernandez was elected during the CTO Annual General Meeting in Georgetown, Guyana, where he is attending the 2026 State of the Tourism Industry Conference. He succeeds Barbados’ Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Ian Gooding-Edghill.
