Crabbs Channel to Be Lit for First Time as Port Authority Upgrades Navigation Markers
Darwin Telemaque says solar lighting at Crabbs and replacement channel markers in St. John’s will improve maritime access, with both projects due for completion by the end of October.
The channel serving Crabbs is set to receive lighting for the first time, enabling day and night access as part of a wider upgrade of maritime navigation infrastructure in Antigua and Barbuda.
Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority Chief Executive Officer Darwin Telemaque said solar lights will be added to navigation aids at Crabbs, while all channel markers in St. John’s will be replaced.
“The lighting of the channel will mark a new day for Antigua, as this will be the first time that we are lighting the channel,” Telemaque said. “This would allow for day and night access.”
Channel markers help vessels navigate designated routes safely. Telemaque said the replacement programme in St. John’s will address damaged and displaced markers that have prompted complaints from cruise captains.
“In addition to lighting and upgrading Crabbs, we are also replacing all the channel markers for St. John’s,” he said. “These have been damaged and displaced, and many cruise captains have complained.”
The authority is also exploring the installation of cameras to help identify people responsible for damaging the navigation aids.
Telemaque described the equipment as expensive and said cameras are needed to identify those who recklessly damage it. The surveillance proposal remains under consideration.
Installation of the St. John’s markers is scheduled to begin later this week, with work at Crabbs following immediately afterwards. Both locations are expected to be completed by the end of October 2026.
“Overall, we are significantly enhancing maritime navigation across the country,” Telemaque said.
