Chinese Ambassador Presents Pelican Court as Independence Gift to Antigua and Barbuda
Zhang Wei says housing partnership reflects equality and mutual respect, with preparations underway for another 100 homes.
Chinese Ambassador Zhang Wei has presented Pelican Court as a gift to the people of Antigua and Barbuda ahead of the nation’s 45th anniversary of independence, saying the development demonstrates how bilateral cooperation can improve everyday lives.
Formally handing over the 150-home project on Thursday, the ambassador placed housing at the centre of people’s well-being and described secure accommodation as a foundation for a better life.
The approximately EC$50 million development, funded through a Chinese government grant, replaces the former Booby Alley housing area with nine buildings containing modern condominium homes.
Zhang said the project combined Chinese construction expertise with the practical needs of the local community.
She credited the teams involved with overcoming logistical and construction challenges to deliver homes intended to provide lasting benefits.
The ambassador also pointed to the wider scope of Chinese cooperation with Antigua and Barbuda, including ports, airport infrastructure, sporting facilities, community centres and agricultural assistance.
That partnership extends to skills development, she said, with more than 300 training and professional development opportunities offered each year.
In an interview following the ceremony, Zhang said respect and equality were central to the relationship, including respect for sovereignty and independence.
She also confirmed that preparations were underway for a further 100 homes under the two countries’ housing cooperation programme.
Asked whether China would support Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s request for 300 additional homes at Perry Bay, Zhang stopped short of announcing approval.
“Of course, I will report to the relevant authority back in China of the Prime Minister’s housing proposal,” she said.
She expressed hope for further cooperation focused on people’s well-being, positioning the Pelican Court handover as another stage in a continuing development partnership.

The Chinese government is helping in developing Antigua and Barbuda but yet still ANTIGUANS don't love Chinese having businesses in Antigua. Ungrateful set of people.
