Antigua and Barbuda is receiving additional military support from across the Caribbean as preparations intensify for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which is expected to attract world leaders and hundreds of delegates next month.
Soldiers from the Cayman Islands Regiment have been deployed to the twin-island nation to assist with security arrangements, logistical coordination and operational preparations ahead of the high-profile international gathering.
An initial contingent consisting of one officer and four troopers departed the Cayman Islands on Thursday, October 15, marking the beginning of the regiment's involvement in the regional security operation.
The regiment's executive officer, Major Paris Goldsbury, is expected to travel to Antigua and Barbuda several days later to join the deployed personnel.
According to Captain Nathan Dack, the regiment's logistics officer, the soldiers will initially focus on establishing the logistical arrangements necessary to support the summit before transitioning into operational assistance and event management responsibilities.
The Cayman Islands personnel will operate alongside members of the Royal Montserrat Defence Force and the Turks and Caicos Islands Regiment, reflecting a coordinated regional approach to supporting the major diplomatic event.
Their involvement comes as Antigua and Barbuda continues preparations to host one of the Commonwealth's most significant international gatherings, with security, transportation and logistical arrangements expected to play a critical role in the summit's success.
Scheduled for November 1 to 4 in St. John's, CHOGM will bring together heads of government, ministers and representatives from business, civil society and youth organisations across the Commonwealth.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla are also scheduled to visit Antigua and Barbuda in connection with the gathering, adding to the significance of the event and the preparations surrounding it.
The deployment highlights the growing involvement of regional defence forces in helping Antigua and Barbuda prepare to welcome international dignitaries while ensuring that the necessary operational support is in place throughout the summit.
