Dwayne George Demands Accountability in Management of New Arts Centre
The Creative Industries Minister says responsible spending, maintenance and professional management must protect the national investment.
Minister for Sports and the Creative Industries Dwayne George has called for strict accountability in the management of the National Performing Arts Centre, describing its stewardship as a public trust.
Speaking at the official opening on October 23, George said the facility’s long-term success would require responsible management of funding, maintenance and bookings.
He directed those entrusted with its operations to act with professionalism and integrity.
“You are the guardians of a public trust,” he said.
George placed the facility’s value at approximately $25 million and said its development reflected a deliberate policy decision to strengthen the country’s creative sector.
He described the acquisition of the former Deluxe Cinema as an investment in cultural identity and opportunity, supported by negotiation and grant funding.
The minister defended the government’s decision to pursue the project despite criticism, saying the completed centre demonstrated its value.
He said young people would now have access to a national stage, while established practitioners would benefit from technical infrastructure suited to their work.
George argued that culture is an essential pillar of development and that the centre should reflect the experiences and stories of Antiguans and Barbudans.
He also appealed directly to artists, stakeholders and the wider public to respect and protect the venue.
The minister described it as a shared cultural home whose value would depend on how it is used and maintained.
His remarks set expectations for the institution as it moves from construction into operation, with responsibility for ensuring that the new venue delivers lasting opportunities for performers and audiences.
