Government Provided More Than US$76,000 for Child’s Medical Care, Health Ministry Says
Ministry outlines government-funded overseas treatment and specialist visits in response to questions about assistance for the child.
The Ministry of Health says more than US$76,000 in direct medical costs has been provided through the Medical Benefits Scheme for a child whose need for overseas treatment has prompted public fundraising appeals and questions about government assistance.
Responding to a letter posted in the media, the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs said the Government has been involved in efforts to secure specialised care for the child from birth.
According to the Ministry, the child was flown to Martinique, where he received specialised medical care over 38 days, with expenses covered by the Government.
A neurosurgeon from Trinidad and Tobago was also brought to Antigua on two occasions to assist with the child’s care, at a reported cost of US$20,000 per visit. The statement did not specify whether those expenses were included in the US$76,000 figure.
The Ministry said medical advice received locally and overseas indicated that no further intervention could be offered through the treatment avenues explored.
It described the situation as deeply difficult for the child and family, while maintaining that decisions about treatment must be guided by the professional judgement of qualified physicians and specialists.
The Ministry also said the family had been involved in discussions about medical decisions, potential outcomes and possible pathways for care.
“Every decision, potential outcomes and likely pathways have been discussed indepth with the family,” the statement said.
Acknowledging the distress surrounding the child’s condition and the public’s desire to help, the Ministry encouraged continued compassion and support for the family.
It maintained that the Government remains committed to the health and well-being of the nation’s children and to ensuring that patients are treated with dignity and compassion.
