Browne Promises Consequential CHOGM as Antigua and Barbuda Marks Independence
PM Gaston Browne urges meaningful action at CHOGM 2026 as Antigua and Barbuda celebrates 45 years of independence and welcomes Commonwealth delegates.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne says CHOGM 2026 must produce meaningful action and strengthen the Commonwealth’s role in promoting global stability and progress.
Speaking at Saturday evening’s pre-independence and Commonwealth welcome reception at Government House, Browne endorsed Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey’s commitment to a summit focused on results.
He said the gathering should reposition the Commonwealth as “a more consequential force for global good, stability and progress,” while reassuring those concerned that it could become a talking shop.
His remarks came as Antigua and Barbuda prepared to celebrate 45 years of political independence while welcoming Commonwealth leaders and delegates.
Browne honoured the generations whose struggles and sacrifices secured the country’s right to determine its own future.
He said the independence anniversary offered an opportunity to recognise national achievements while renewing the commitment to an inclusive society in which every Antiguan and Barbudan has the opportunity to succeed.
The Prime Minister pointed to the country’s cultural traditions and sporting achievements, including those of national hero Sir Vivian Richards, as evidence that national greatness is shaped by people’s courage, talent and determination.
He also stressed that international partnerships remain particularly important for small island developing states facing climate change, economic vulnerability and an increasingly uncertain world.
“We may be small in size, but we are never small in ambition,” Browne said.
He thanked visiting delegates for sharing in the independence celebrations and invited them to experience the country’s hospitality, culture and national spirit.
