‘We Would Never Do That’: Smith Says Stray Dogs Will Be Sheltered, Not Put Down
Minister says dogs collected from the streets are being housed at the Humane Society, with efforts planned to reunite them with owners or find new homes.
Agriculture Minister Anthony Smith has assured residents that dogs collected during the ongoing stray animal removal exercise will be sheltered, not killed if they remain unclaimed.
Speaking to Antigua.news, Smith firmly rejected suggestions that the operation would lead to dogs being put down.
“No, no, no, not at all. We would never do that,” he said.
Smith explained that the animals are being taken to the Humane Society, where kennels are available to accommodate them. He said efforts would also be made to find homes for the dogs.
Veterinarian Dr Chere Kellman, who joined the interview, confirmed that she had participated in collecting dogs alongside a dog control officer.
“Once we collect the dog, we take it directly to the Humane Society,” she said.
Kellman said the animals receive daily food and water, with veterinary assistance available through the organisation.
The Veterinary Authority has separately reassured the public that the operation is intended to support public safety, animal welfare and responsible stray animal management.
“It is not a mass euthanasia exercise,” the authority stated.
Its notice outlines arrangements for humane transportation, veterinary assessment and opportunities for owners to identify and reclaim their pets. Photographs of impounded dogs are to be shared publicly for two working days, while adoption or rehoming arrangements will be pursued for those left unclaimed.
Owners have been urged to keep their dogs secured, supervised and identifiable, and to rely on official updates about the exercise.
