Prime Minister Gaston Browne assumed the Commonwealth Chair-in-Office role as Samoa formally handed over leadership during the opening of CHOGM 2026 in St. John’s.

Samoa’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance presented Browne with an ula fala, a traditional Samoan necklace, symbolising the transition between the two island hosts.

The outgoing chair’s representative thanked Antigua and Barbuda for its hospitality and arrangements, while pledging Samoa’s continued support.

In his address, Browne committed to working with member governments, the Commonwealth Secretary-General and other partners to advance investment, strengthen cooperation and deliver lasting benefits.

He identified trade, climate resilience, youth opportunities and international financial reform among the priorities requiring collective action.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey noted that Antigua and Barbuda was taking the chair immediately after another island nation, reinforcing the importance of small states within the association.
