Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell has secured a second consecutive term in office after leading his National Democratic Congress (NDC) to a landslide victory in Grenada’s general election, capturing 14 of the country’s 15 parliamentary seats.

The result marks a historic achievement for the NDC, which has won consecutive general elections for the first time, breaking a pattern that previously saw the party lose power after serving a single term.

Preliminary results from Thursday’s election, held on November 5, show the governing party expanding its parliamentary majority from nine seats in 2022 to 14, leaving the opposition New National Party (NNP) with only one seat in the House of Representatives.

The NNP, led by Emmalin Pierre, secured its sole victory in St. George North West, where Dr. Adrian Joseph retained the constituency for the opposition.

Mitchell’s victory comes four years after he first swept into office in June 2022, when the NDC won nine parliamentary seats and ended the nine-year administration of former Prime Minister Keith Mitchell.

The latest election represents a significant shift in Grenada’s parliamentary composition, with the NNP reduced from six seats to one.

The result is also a major setback for Pierre, who had sought to lead the opposition party back into government.

According to preliminary election figures, the NDC received 37,369 votes, representing approximately 61 per cent of valid ballots cast, compared with 22,567 votes, or 36.84 per cent, for the NNP.

Voter turnout stood at approximately 63.3 per cent, with 61,460 ballots cast from an electorate of 97,031 registered voters.

The victory gives Mitchell's administration another term to pursue its policy agenda, including economic development, infrastructure improvements, healthcare, education and employment opportunities.

The election also marks a new chapter for the NDC, which previously formed governments in 1990 and 2008 but was defeated at the following general elections.

While the preliminary results establish a commanding parliamentary majority for the governing party, the figures remain subject to the electoral authorities’ final verification and certification.
