Antigua and Barbuda’s steelpan music took centre stage during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026 when British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband joined members of the CUB Hell’s Gate Steel Orchestra in playing the iconic Caribbean instrument.

The moment, captured in a video shared by the London Evening Standard, brought international attention to the renowned Antiguan steel orchestra and prompted a celebration from its sponsor, Caribbean Union Bank (CUB).

In a statement issued on Friday, November 6, the bank expressed pride in the orchestra’s recognition, describing the occasion as a demonstration of the power of music and culture to connect people across borders.

The interaction saw two of Britain’s most senior government officials participating alongside members of the orchestra, highlighting Antigua and Barbuda’s musical heritage during a major international gathering.

Caribbean Union Bank General Manager Karen Richardson praised the orchestra for continuing to showcase the country’s talent on the international stage.

“Moments like these remind us that our culture has the power to connect people across borders. We are incredibly proud of CUB Hell’s Gate Steel Orchestra and the role they continue to play in showcasing the very best of Antigua and Barbuda,” Richardson said.

“At CUB, supporting our communities means investing in the people, traditions and institutions that make our nation exceptional,” she added.

The bank said the recognition reflected the importance of supporting local talent and preserving the cultural traditions that contribute to Antigua and Barbuda’s national identity.

CUB Hell’s Gate Steel Orchestra has long been associated with the country’s steelpan tradition, and its appearance alongside the British officials provided another opportunity to bring Antiguan music to an international audience.

The engagement came during CHOGM 2026, which brought Commonwealth leaders and international representatives to Antigua and Barbuda for discussions on matters affecting member states.

Caribbean Union Bank reaffirmed its commitment to supporting cultural initiatives, preserving the nation’s musical heritage and creating opportunities for local talent.
