An 82-year-old Barbadian attorney has been sentenced to more than six years in prison after admitting to stealing BDS$855,000 entrusted to him by a client for the purchase of property.

Hilary Jeffery Nelson was sentenced on Thursday to six years and 64 days at Dodds Prison, bringing a serious breach of professional trust before the courts.

The money had been entrusted to Nelson to facilitate a property transaction in Barbados but was instead misappropriated.

In handing down the sentence, Justice Pamela Beckles condemned the attorney's actions, highlighting the responsibility placed on legal practitioners to safeguard money entrusted to them by clients.

The judge warned that misconduct of this nature could undermine public confidence in the legal profession and damage Barbados' reputation.

Beyond the custodial sentence, Nelson was ordered to repay the full BDS$855,000 within 12 months.

Failure to comply with the repayment order could result in an additional two years in prison.

The case highlights the serious consequences of financial misconduct within the legal profession, particularly when clients place substantial sums of money in the care of attorneys to complete property transactions.

Nelson has begun serving his sentence at Dodds Prison.

He should be sentenced for way longer than that so he would die in prison.
