The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has issued a stern warning to a coconut vendor who publicly called on the agency to remove waste from his business location, making it clear that commercial operators are responsible for cleaning up after themselves.

The Authority's response follows the circulation of a video on social media showing the vendor at his place of business, calling for assistance with the removal of waste generated by his trade.

In a strongly worded public notice, the NSWMA rejected the suggestion that responsibility for disposing of commercial waste should fall entirely on the agency.

“Keeping Antigua and Barbuda clean is a shared responsibility, and every individual is accountable for the waste they generate,” the Authority stated.

It reminded business owners that they are responsible for properly collecting, storing and disposing of waste produced through their operations, whether they operate roadside vending businesses, restaurants, shops or other commercial establishments.

According to the NSWMA, its mandate to provide public waste collection and management services does not absolve individual businesses of their responsibility to manage the waste they produce.

The Authority specifically advised the coconut vendor to take immediate action to remove and properly dispose of the waste associated with his business.

It warned that failure to comply could result in enforcement action under the Litter Control and Prevention Act, including the imposition of applicable penalties.

The NSWMA also delivered a pointed message to individuals who contribute to environmental pollution while expecting the government agency to address the consequences.

“You cannot demand a clean environment while contributing to the very problem you expect someone else to resolve,” the Authority declared.

It further stressed that littering and irresponsible waste disposal would not be tolerated, adding that it would continue supporting the enforcement of laws governing litter prevention.

“The days of shifting responsibility for personal and commercial waste onto the NSWMA must come to an end,” the statement continued.

The Authority said maintaining a clean environment requires cooperation from vendors, business owners, residents and visitors alike.

It concluded with a warning that litterbugs across Antigua and Barbuda would not be tolerated.
