A significant shift is underway that aims to enhance Barbuda’s integration into Antigua and Barbuda’s national framework.
Ambassador Clarence Pilgrim, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Barbuda Affairs, highlighted this initiative during a recent visit.
His team held discussions with local government employees to outline new strategies for improved governance on the island.
One of Ambassador Pilgrim’s key announcements was the establishment of a Barbuda Affairs Department. This new department will consolidate all governmental services and activities on Barbuda, addressing long-standing issues of neglect.
Pilgrim emphasized the importance of this move by stating, “We are here to implement the mandate from the Cabinet to ensure that Barbuda is fully integrated into the overall administration.”
This new approach signifies a crucial step towards empowering Barbuda within the broader governance structure.
Acknowledging his limited understanding of the island’s unique challenges, Pilgrim urged the local staff to share their insights.
He underscored the value of their experience, believing it crucial for the future progress of Barbuda.
During the meeting, concerns regarding training opportunities emerged as a major topic. The Barbuda staff expressed a pressing need for further training, particularly to ensure that their skills align with those of their counterparts in St. John’s.
In response, Ambassador Pilgrim assured them that efforts would be made to facilitate training, particularly in using the ‘free-balance’ accounting system important for treasury functions.
Moving forward, Pilgrim indicated that his team plans to make more frequent visits to Barbuda.
