On Sunday, Antigua and Barbuda celebrated the Chinese New Year, marking the Year of the Snake. Many residents joined officials and representatives from the Chinese Embassy and members of the local Chinese community in honoring this festive occasion.
The event featured various cultural performances from both local and Chinese artists, showcasing the rich traditions of the New Year festivities.
Chinese Ambassador to St. John’s, Zhang Yanling, also shared her thoughts during the celebrations. She expressed optimism for 2024 as a year filled with achievements for the relationship between China and Antigua and Barbuda.
“In 2024, we will celebrate many successes in our exchanges and cooperation across multiple sectors. Guided by the agreements made by our leaders, our collaborative efforts have led to substantive progress,” she said
Governor General Sir Rodney Williams says the Year of the Snake symbolizes qualities such as wisdom, resilience, and transformation.
He emphasized how these traits reflect the changing global landscape and the mutual aspirations shared by Antigua and Barbuda and China.
“Our commitment to the One China Principle is unwavering, serving as a fundamental aspect of our diplomatic ties. This principle is crucial in promoting harmony and mutual respect in global affairs,” he stated.
The Governor General also praised the advancements made by the Chinese people in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Electric Vehicles, and the Belt and Road Initiative.

In his address, he acknowledged the transformative contributions of the Chinese government to Antigua and Barbuda’s development.
He noted, “China’s support has been instrumental in various significant projects, including the construction of the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, the expansion of the cargo port at Deep Water Harbour, and the establishment of schools and educational facilities. These initiatives highlight the potential of international collaboration for the common good.”
Several cultural performances also formed part of the event.
Among them were the Pandemonium Steel Orchestra, which has received considerable support from the Chinese Embassy, alongside notable local artist Calypsonian Lady Falcon.
Several students from various schools also participated in the celebrations, contributing to the festivities in a range of ways.
